PVC is a material that is frequently used in wire insulation because it is sturdy, long-lasting, and affordable. But as it burns, poisonous gases and vapors may be released, endangering both people and animals. Additionally, when PVC burns, it can emit a dense, black smoke that reduces sight and makes it challenging to escape a burning car or building.
Due to the increased risk of fire and the possibility that passengers could be exposed to the fumes and gases generated during a fire, PVC is often not advised for use in mass transit applications such as buses and trains. Alternative materials may be utilized in these applications instead of PVC since they produce less smoke and are less harmful. Examples of such materials include fluoropolymers and thermoplastic elastomers.
