Connector Ingress Protection

Updated: Oct 23

What IP ratings must wire harness connectors meet for industrial engine applications?

To guarantee that they are sufficiently protected against the entry of dust, moisture, and other environmental conditions that could potentially cause damage or malfunction, wire harness connectors for industrial engine applications must meet specific Ingress Protection (IP) ratings.

Two digits make up the IP rating system, the first of which represents the degree of protection against solid particles and the second, the degree of protection against liquid infiltration. The protection increases as the number rises.

It is advised to utilize connections with an IP rating of at least for IP65 industrial engine applications. According to this grade, the connector is shielded from dust and impervious to low-pressure water jets coming from any angle. Depending on the particular application and operating environment, connectors with greater IP ratings may occasionally be required.

Given the potential for performance concerns or wire harness system failure, it is crucial to thoroughly assess the IP rating requirements for a given application before choosing connectors with insufficient protection.
